3 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
¾ cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups cold water

Steps:

  • Sift flour, sugar, salt, soda, and cocoa together into a 9 x 13 inch ungreased cake pan. Make three wells. Pour oil into one well, vinegar into second, and vanilla into third well. Pour cold water over all, and stir well with fork.

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup water
1/3 cup canola oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon cider vinegar

Steps:

  • In an 8x8 inch square baking pan combine the flour, cocoa, sugar, salt and baking soda. Mix until it is completely light brown.
  • When it is mixed, make 4 dents in the mixture with a spoon, 2 large dents and 2 small dents.
  • Pour the water into one of the large dents.
  • Pour the oil into the other large dent.
  • Pour vanilla into one of the small dents.
