SPICED ORANGES AND DATES

Spiced Oranges and Dates image

Fresh oranges and dates in a spiced syrup. Recipe modified from a Woolworths Fresh Magazine recipe. I love fresh dates and this makes for a great fresh fruit dessert. Great served with fresh Greek yogurt or custard. You can add some orange liquer to make this extra special (add with the water and sugar). To toast your almonds- add them to a dry pan and heat them until fragrant and toasted. keep turned or tossed as they will toast quickly. Vegan suitable if served without the custard or yogurt

Yield Makes 1 1/2 cups

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Steps:

  • Combine the sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil; stir until sugar has dissolved. Combine juice and cornstarch in a bowl; pour into sugar syrup. Simmer gently until thick, 6 to 8 minutes. Add butter; stir until it melts. Serve warm.

Tips:

  • Select the right oranges: Choose oranges that are firm, heavy for their size, and have smooth, unblemished skin. Avoid oranges that are soft, spongy, or have bruises or cuts.
  • Zest the oranges before peeling: Zesting the oranges before peeling them will help release their fragrant oils and add more flavor to the syrup.
  • Use a sharp knife to peel the oranges: A sharp knife will make it easier to peel the oranges without tearing the flesh.
  • Remove the pith from the oranges: The pith is the white part of the orange peel that is bitter. Be sure to remove it completely before slicing the oranges.
  • Slice the oranges thinly: Slicing the oranges thinly will help them cook evenly in the syrup.
  • Use a heavy-bottomed saucepan: A heavy-bottomed saucepan will help distribute the heat evenly and prevent the syrup from burning.
  • Bring the syrup to a boil, then reduce the heat: Bringing the syrup to a boil will help dissolve the sugar. Once the syrup is boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer for the specified time.
  • Let the oranges cool in the syrup: Allowing the oranges to cool in the syrup will help them absorb the flavor of the syrup.

Conclusion:

Oranges in Fragrant Syrup is a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that is perfect for any occasion. The oranges are cooked in a simple syrup made with sugar, water, and orange zest, and then they are allowed to cool in the syrup. This allows them to absorb the flavor of the syrup and become incredibly flavorful. The oranges can be served on their own, or they can be used as a topping for cakes, pies, or ice cream.
