1 (.25) envelope dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water

3 eggs
1/4 cup butter, melted and cooled
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups milk

  • In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water with a pinch of the sugar. Set aside to ferment, about 10 minutes.

  • Place the cakes in a heavy ungreased skillet, and cook over low heat. Fry the cakes on each side until golden.

Tips:

  • Activate the yeast properly: Always use lukewarm water or milk (around 110°F) and a pinch of sugar to activate the yeast. Proof the yeast for 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes foamy and bubbly.
  • Knead the dough well: Kneading the dough develops the gluten, which gives the bolo levedo its characteristic chewy texture. Knead the dough for at least 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place: The dough should rise in a warm place (around 80°F) for 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size. This will help the bolo levedo become light and airy.
  • Bake the bolo levedo at a high temperature: Bake the bolo levedo at a high temperature (around 375°F) for 30-35 minutes, or until it becomes golden brown. This will help the bolo levedo develop a crispy crust.
  • Serve the bolo levedo warm or at room temperature: Bolo levedo is best served warm or at room temperature. It can be enjoyed on its own or with a variety of toppings, such as butter, jam, or cheese.

Conclusion:

Bolo levedo is a delicious and versatile Portuguese bread that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It is easy to make and can be customized with a variety of toppings. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced baker, you are sure to enjoy making and eating this traditional Portuguese bread.
