Tips:

  • Choose the right potatoes: For the best mashed potatoes, use starchy potatoes like Russet or Yukon Gold. These potatoes will hold their shape better and create a creamier, smoother texture.
  • Boil the potatoes until they are fork-tender: Overcooking the potatoes will make them mushy. To check if the potatoes are done, insert a fork into the center of a potato. If the fork goes in and out easily, the potatoes are ready.
  • Drain the potatoes thoroughly: After boiling the potatoes, drain them well in a colander. This will help to remove excess water and make the potatoes creamier.
  • Use a potato ricer or masher: For the smoothest mashed potatoes, use a potato ricer or masher. A ricer will produce the lightest, fluffiest potatoes, while a masher will give you a more rustic texture.
  • Add butter, milk, and seasonings: Start with a small amount of butter and milk, and then add more to taste. Season the potatoes with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and any other desired seasonings.
  • Keep the potatoes warm: Mashed potatoes are best served warm. If you are making them ahead of time, keep them warm in a slow cooker or covered dish in a warm oven.

Red, white, and blue mashed potatoes are a festive and delicious side dish that is perfect for any patriotic holiday.
