Tips:

  • Choose the right yams: Look for firm, plump yams with smooth, unblemished skin. Avoid any yams that are soft, shriveled, or have dark spots.
  • Cook the yams properly: Yams can be boiled, baked, or roasted. Boiling is the quickest method, but baking or roasting will give the yams a more caramelized flavor.
  • Mash the yams thoroughly: Use a potato masher or a food processor to mash the yams until they are smooth and creamy.
  • Season the yams to taste: Add salt, pepper, and other spices to taste. You can also add a touch of sweetness with sugar or maple syrup.
  • Chill the mixture before baking: This will help the squares to set and hold their shape.
  • Bake the squares until they are golden brown: This usually takes about 30-35 minutes.
  • Serve the squares warm or at room temperature: They can be enjoyed on their own or topped with whipped cream, ice cream, or fruit.

Conclusion:

Southern yam dessert squares are a delicious and versatile treat that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They are also a great way to use up leftover yams. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a dessert that is sure to please everyone at your table.
