Steps:
- Pierce squash (about an inch deep) all over with a small sharp knife to prevent bursting. Cook in an 800-watt microwave oven on high power (100 percent) for 6 to 7 minutes. Turn squash over and microwave until squash feels slightly soft when pressed, 8 to 10 minutes more. Cool squash for 5 minutes.
- Meanwhile, melt butter in a small heavy saucepan over moderately high heat. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until golden, about 1 minute. Stir in spices and salt and remove from heat.
- Carefully halve squash lengthwise (it will give off steam) and remove and discard seeds. Working over a bowl, scrape squash flesh with a fork, loosening and separating strands as you remove it from skin. Toss with spiced butter and cilantro.
Tips:
- Choose the right spaghetti squash: Look for a squash that is firm and has a deep yellow color. A ripe squash will have a slightly sweet smell.
- Cook the spaghetti squash properly: To ensure the spaghetti squash is cooked evenly, poke holes in the squash with a fork before baking. This will allow the steam to escape and prevent the squash from bursting.
- Use a sharp knife to shred the spaghetti squash: A sharp knife will make it easier to shred the spaghetti squash into long, thin strands.
- Don't overcook the sauce: The sauce for the moussaka should be cooked until it is heated through, but not overcooked. Overcooking the sauce will make it thick and pasty.
- Layer the moussaka properly: The layers of the moussaka should be arranged in the following order: eggplant, ground beef or lamb, sauce, spaghetti squash, and cheese.
- Bake the moussaka until it is golden brown: The moussaka should be baked until the top is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Conclusion:
Spaghetti squash moussaka is a delicious and healthy twist on the classic Greek dish. This recipe is easy to make and can be tailored to your own dietary needs. Whether you are looking for a vegetarian option or a hearty meat-based meal, spaghetti squash moussaka is sure to please everyone at your table.
