SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE- EASY

Sweet and Sour Sauce- EASY image

I got this recipe back in the mid 1970's from a Chinese cooking class. Its a versatile sauce that can be used for many dishes or a dip for egg rolls. One of my friends who is an authentic Chinese person was horrified. She told me it is no where near a real Chinese sweet and sour. I'm sorry Lee, but I do like it and its easy. ...

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 can(s) (8 ounces) crushed pineapple in own juice
1 c catsup
1 c unsweetened pineapple juice
1/2 c brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 c cider vinegar
1 pinch dried red pepper flakes, optional

Steps:

  • 1. Pour un-drained canned pineapple in blender. Process until finely chopped. Pour pineapple into a medium saucepan with catsup, juice, brown sugar, and vinegar. If using pepper add now. Cook over medium/high heat, stirring, until mixture just begins to boil. Reduce heat and cook (stirring frequently) until mixture reaches the consistency you desire. Store any unused sauce in frig.
  • 2. Use to make any sweet and sour dish. Just stir fry meat and veggies and add this sauce before serving over rice. I like this as a dip for egg rolls, especially with the red pepper.

Tips:

  • Use ripe pineapple: Fresh pineapple chunks add a delicious tropical flavor to the sauce. Choose ripe pineapple that is sweet and juicy.
  • Adjust the heat level: If you like your sauce spicy, add more red pepper flakes. If you prefer a milder sauce, reduce the amount of red pepper flakes or omit them altogether.
  • Make it ahead of time: Sweet and sour sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. This makes it a great option for busy weeknights.
  • Use versatile sauce: Sweet and sour sauce can be used as a dipping sauce, a marinade, or a stir-fry sauce. It's also a great addition to egg rolls, spring rolls, and wontons.
  • Experiment with different ingredients: Feel free to experiment with different ingredients to create your own unique sweet and sour sauce. For example, you could add ginger, garlic, or orange juice to the sauce.

Conclusion:

Sweet and sour sauce is a delicious and versatile sauce that can be used in a variety of dishes. It's easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy way to add flavor to your meal, give sweet and sour sauce a try.
