Yield 9 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 (12 ounce) package wide egg noodles
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt (optional)
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups shredded mild cheddar cheese
1 (6 ounce) can tuna in water, drained
1 (12 ounce) package frozen peas
1 bunch fresh broccoli, use flowers only

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Prepare a medium baking dish by spraying with cooking spray.
  • In a large pot of water, boil noodles until al dente. Drain well.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine flour, butter, and salt. Stir until butter is melted and ingredients are combined evenly.
  • Add milk, and whisk until the sauce thickens (usually it is at the proper consistency by the time it begins to boil).
  • Add cheese to mixture, and whisk until cheese is melted and mixture is well blended.
  • Stir in tuna, peas, broccoli, and noodles.
  • Spread the mixture evenly in prepared dish.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes or until the top noodles begins to turn golden brown.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Noodles: Use a short, sturdy pasta like elbow macaroni or penne for a classic tuna noodle casserole. You can also use a heartier pasta like rotini or shells for a more substantial dish.
  • Cook the Noodles Al Dente: Don't overcook the noodles, as they will continue to cook in the casserole. Cook them until they are just tender to the bite.
  • Use High-Quality Tuna: Opt for solid white albacore tuna packed in water or olive oil for the best flavor and texture. Avoid tuna packed in oil, as it can make the casserole greasy.
  • Drain the Tuna Well: Before adding the tuna to the casserole, be sure to drain it thoroughly to remove any excess liquid.
  • Use Fresh Vegetables: Fresh vegetables will give your casserole the best flavor. If you don't have fresh vegetables on hand, frozen vegetables can also be used.
  • Season to Taste: Don't be afraid to season the casserole to your liking. Add more salt, pepper, or garlic powder if desired.
  • Top with Cheese: A layer of cheese on top of the casserole will give it a golden brown crust and make it even more delicious. Use a good melting cheese like cheddar, mozzarella, or Parmesan.

Conclusion:

Tuna noodle broccoli casserole is a classic comfort food dish that is easy to make and loved by people of all ages. With its simple ingredients and delicious flavor, it is a perfect meal for busy weeknights or potlucks. By following the tips above, you can create a tuna noodle casserole that is sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
