Categories     Condiment/Spread     Sauce     Berry     Fruit     Nut     Christmas     Thanksgiving     Vegetarian     Cranberry     Orange     Walnut     Fall     Winter     Vegan     Bon Appétit

Yield Makes about 4 cups

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 12-ounce bag cranberries
1 cup sugar
1 cup fresh orange juice
1 teaspoon grated orange peel
1 medium seedless orange, all peel and pith cut away, fruit diced
3/4 cup walnuts, toasted, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

Steps:

  • Combine first 4 ingredients in medium saucepan; bring to boil over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Cook until cranberries are tender and mixture thickens, stirring occasionally, about 12 minutes. Remove from heat. Mix in orange pieces and walnuts. Transfer to bowl. Cover and chill until cold, at least 2 hours and up to 3 days.

Tips:

  • Choose ripe cranberries that are firm and plump to make a flavorful and visually appealing sauce. Avoid soft or damaged berries.
  • Keep the heat low when simmering the sauce to prevent the cranberries from bursting and becoming mushy.
  • Add sugar gradually, tasting the sauce as you go, to ensure it reaches your desired level of sweetness without becoming overpowering.
  • For a thicker sauce, mash some of the cranberries with a spoon or potato masher while the sauce is simmering.
  • Feel free to adjust the spices and flavorings according to your preference. For instance, add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm, aromatic flavor, or stir in a tablespoon of orange zest for a citrusy kick.
  • If you're using fresh walnuts, toast them in a pan over medium heat until fragrant and slightly browned. This enhances their flavor and texture.
  • Store leftover cranberry sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freeze it for up to 6 months.
