Homemade chocolate drops image

Create a sophisticated chocolate box, perfect as a gift for guests at a wedding

Provided by Sarah Cook

Categories     Treat

Time 1h15m

Yield Makes about 200, enough for 20-40 gifts

Number Of Ingredients 8

200g dark chocolate (we used 70% cocoa content)
a pinch of hot chilli powder
red edible glitter (we used splatcooking.com)
200g milk chocolate (we used Green & Black's cook's chocolate with extra cocoa butter)
an eighth of a tsp flaky sea salt
25g pistachios , finely chopped
200g white chocolate
crystallised rosé petals (we used squires-shop.com)

Steps:

  • For the dark chilli drops: break the chocolate into chunks and melt in a heatproof bowl over a pan of barely simmering water. Meanwhile, line a few flat baking trays with baking parchment. Once the chocolate has melted, stir in the chilli powder. Use a teaspoon to drop 'drops' of the chocolate onto the baking parchment. Every 10 or 20 drops, scatter over a small amount of red glitter before the chocolate sets. Leave to set in a cool place, but do not put in the fridge.
  • For the salted pistachio drops: melt the chocolate and prepare baking parchment as before. Once the chocolate has melted, stir in the salt, then make drops as above, topping with chopped pistachios.
  • For the white chocolate drops: carefully melt the chocolate as above. Make drops, as above. Once they are partially set, top each with a crystallised rose petal.

Time 1h45m

Yield Makes 18

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
4 teaspoons instant espresso
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
2/3 cup packed light-brown sugar
1 large egg
4 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, melted and cooled
1 tablespoon milk
Confectioners' sugar, for coating

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, sift together flour, cocoa, espresso, baking powder, and salt. With an electric mixer, cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg until well combined; mix in cooled chocolate. With mixer on low, gradually add flour mixture; beat in milk until just combined. Flatten dough into a disk; wrap in plastic. Freeze until firm, about 45 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Pour confectioners' sugar (about 1/2 cup) into a medium bowl; working in batches, roll balls in sugar two times, letting them sit in sugar between coatings.

Wisconsin's Chocolate Drops

Wisconsin's chocolate drop cookies are a delicious and unique treat. The secret ingredient is snow! Yes, you read that right. Adding snow to the batter gives these cookies a light and fluffy texture that's impossible to resist. If you're looking for a winter treat that will warm your heart, look no further. Here are a few tips for making these chocolate drop cookies:
  • Use real butter. Don't be tempted to use butter substitutes; they'll give your cookies a greasy texture.
  • Chill the butter and milk before using. Chilling the butter and milk helps prevent the cookies from spreading too much in the pan.
  • Don't overwork the batter. Overworked batter makes tough cookies. Stir until just combined.
  • Use fresh snow. Fresh snow is more likely to give your cookies that light and fluffy texture.
  • Let the cookies cool completely before eating them. This allows the cookies to set and develop their full flavors.
  • Conclusion Wisconsin's chocolate drop cookies are a delicious and easy-to-make winter treat. The secret ingredient, snow, gives these cookies a unique texture and a special connection to the winter season. Be sure to give them a try the next time you need a sweet treat.
