APPLE BERRY SALSA WITH CINNAMON CHIPS

Apple Berry Salsa with Cinnamon Chips image

This is a delicious snack, especially in the summer when strawberries are plentiful. It makes a huge hit at church pot lucks.

Provided by Terrie Hoelscher @Blessed1

Categories     Fruit Appetizers

Number Of Ingredients 10

3 large flour tortillas
- water
1 tablespoon(s) sugar
1/2 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
2 medium granny smith apples, diced
1 cup(s) strawberries, hulled and diced
1 - kiwi fruit, peeled and diced
1 small orange
2 tablespoon(s) light brown sugar
2 tablespoon(s) apple jelly

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 475 F. Brush tortillas with water, using a pastry brush. Combine sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over tortillas. Cut tortillas into eight wedges each, using kitchen shears or a sharp knife. Place wedges on a cookie sheet or stone. Bake 5 -7 minutes, until golden brown. Remove to a cooling rack.
  • Meanwhile, peel, core and slice apples, and dice them finely. Hull strawberries and kiwi; dice both. Zest orange [use all the zest, but don't go in as deep as the pith, as it can be bitter]. Juice orange. Combine prepared fruit, orange zest, orange juice, brown sugar and apple jelly in a mixing bowl. Mix well, and allow to sit in the refrigerator, covered, for at least a 1/2 hour, so flavors will blend. Serve fruit salsa with cinnamon chips. *Note: I have also used cinnamon graham crackers in place of the tortilla cinnamon chips, if I'm in a hurry. They're great.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of apples. This will give your salsa a more complex flavor. Some good choices include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn.
  • Don't overcook the apples. They should still have a slight crunch to them.
  • Be careful not to add too much sugar. The apples and berries should be sweet enough on their own.
  • Serve the salsa immediately or store it in the refrigerator for later. It will keep for up to 3 days.
  • Garnish the salsa with a few fresh mint leaves or a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar. This will add a nice finishing touch.

Conclusion:

Apple berry salsa with cinnamon chips is a delicious and unique salsa that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be customized to your own taste. Serve it with tortilla chips, crackers, or your favorite grilled meats and vegetables. This salsa is also a great way to use up leftover apples and berries. So next time you have some extra fruit on hand, give this recipe a try. You won't be disappointed!
