TARTAR SAUCE

Tartar Sauce image

Packed with crunchy, sharp zing from onion, and tang and savoriness from capers, this homemade tartar sauce delivers bold freshness. Once you've mixed the base below, you can stir in more of whichever ingredients you most enjoy. And if you don't like the bite of raw onion, you can soak it in cold water for 10 minutes and drain before stirring it in. Thick yet spreadable, this works as a dip, too.

Time 5m

Yield About 1 cup

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup finely chopped dill pickle
2 tablespoons finely chopped white onion
2 teaspoons capers, finely chopped
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh dill or parsley (optional)

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, pickle, onion, capers, lemon juice, mustard and dill, if using. Use immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
  • Use as a dip for fried fish or other seafood, fries, chips, pita chips and crudités. Mix into tuna, egg or potato salad, or spread onto bread for tuna, egg or chicken salad sandwiches, as well as for roast beef and fried chicken or fish sandwiches, and salmon burgers.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality mayonnaise. This is the base of the sauce, so make sure it's good.
  • Use fresh ingredients. This will make a big difference in the flavor of the sauce.
  • Don't over-chop the ingredients. You want them to retain some of their texture.
  • Be careful not to add too much salt. The capers and pickles will already add some saltiness.
  • Taste the sauce as you go and adjust the seasonings accordingly.
  • Serve the sauce immediately or refrigerate it for later use.

Conclusion:

Tartar sauce is a versatile condiment that can be used with a variety of dishes. It's perfect for fish, seafood, chicken, and vegetables. It can also be used as a spread for sandwiches or wraps. No matter how you use it, tartar sauce is sure to add a delicious flavor to your meal.
