COSMOPOLITAN CRANBERRY SAUCE

Cosmopolitan Cranberry Sauce image

Provided by Rick Rodgers

Categories     Sauce     Vodka     Alcoholic     Thanksgiving     Cranberry     Triple Sec

Yield Makes 3 cups

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 (12-ounce) bag fresh cranberries, rinsed, drained, and picked through
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup vodka
3 tablespoons orange-flavored liqueur, such as Grand Marnier or Triple Sec

Steps:

  • In heavy medium saucepan over moderate heat, combine cranberries, sugar, and 1/2 cup water. Bring to boil, stirring often to dissolve sugar, then reduce heat to moderately low and simmer, stirring often, until thickened and reduced to about 3 cups, about 15 minutes.
  • Transfer to medium bowl and cool, stirring often, until tepid, about 30 minutes. Stir in vodka and liqueur. Transfer to serving bowl, cover, and refrigerate until chilled and set, at least 2 hours. (Sauce can be made up to 2 weeks ahead and refrigerated.) Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Tips:

  • Use fresh cranberries. Fresh cranberries have a brighter, tarter flavor than frozen cranberries. If you can't find fresh cranberries, you can use frozen cranberries, but be sure to thaw them completely before using.
  • Choose a good quality orange liqueur. The orange liqueur you use will have a big impact on the flavor of your sauce. Look for a liqueur that is made with real oranges, not artificial flavors.
  • Don't overcook the sauce. The sauce should be cooked until the cranberries have burst and the sauce has thickened, but it should not be cooked for too long, or the cranberries will become mushy.
  • Let the sauce cool before serving. The sauce will thicken as it cools, so it's best to let it cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.
  • Serve the sauce with roasted turkey, ham, or pork. Cranberry sauce is a classic holiday side dish that pairs well with roasted meats.
