This is a homemade mix so you do not have to buy store bought gravy mixes and you can control what is in your gravy. Steps:
- 1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl
- 2. Mix slowly, as it is really poofy .
- 3. Store in an airtight container.
- 4. Add 3 tablespoons of this mix to 1 1/2 cups water into a pan and bring to a boil.. turn down heat and simmer for 1 to 2 minutes. Sometimes I will add a tablespoon of butter to this gravy.
- 5. I usually double this if I am making gravy with slices of beef, pork or venison because I like this for leftovers.
- 6. This makes a wonderful tasting gravy but you can add other spices or you can add a little leftover coffee or kitchen bouquet to your gravy for added color and flavor..if you want.
- 7. The best part of this mix is that I can add a tablespoon or 2 of this powder to soups or stews to thicken broth and add extra flavor.
BROWN GRAVY MIX
I like this recipe because I can control the amount of sodium in it. The packaged mixes on the market contain enormous amounts of salt. I use low sodium beef bouillon. This makes a single recipe, but you can use the calculator to make a larger recipe and have it stored in your cupboard ready to use. This is nice made in the pan after you've browned meat.

Tips:
- Always start with a flavorful base: Use a combination of aromatics like onions, garlic, celery, and carrots to create a flavorful base for your gravy. Sauté them in butter or oil until they are softened and fragrant.
- Use high-quality ingredients: The quality of your ingredients will directly impact the taste of your gravy. Use fresh, flavorful vegetables and herbs, and choose a good quality beef or chicken broth.
- Brown your meat or vegetables: Browning your meat or vegetables before adding them to the gravy will add depth of flavor and color. Be sure to sear the meat or vegetables over high heat so that they develop a nice crust.
- Use a roux or cornstarch to thicken your gravy: A roux is a mixture of equal parts butter and flour that is cooked until it is golden brown. A cornstarch slurry is a mixture of cornstarch and water that is added to the gravy towards the end of cooking. Both methods will help to thicken your gravy and give it a smooth, creamy consistency.
- Season to taste: Once your gravy is thickened, season it to taste with salt, pepper, and any other desired herbs or spices. Be sure to taste the gravy as you go and adjust the seasonings accordingly.
Conclusion:
With these tips in mind, you can easily make a delicious and flavorful brown gravy that will complement any meal. Whether you are serving it with roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, or a simple piece of grilled fish, a good brown gravy will take your dish to the next level.
