Who doesn't like pretzels and cheese dip. This is simple, easy, quick and a great appetizer. Try MNF (Monday Night Football), a Sunday tail gate, or just a pot luck dinner. Just easy. If you don't want salt, pepper, poppy seeds, parmesan, lots of other topping can be put on the pretzel if you don't want salt..

Time 40m

Yield 24 pretzels, 24 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 (11 ounce) can pillsbury breadsticks
1 egg, beaten
2 tablespoons kosher salt (or you can you poppy seeds, or even grated parmesan, use your favorite pretzel toppings, I prefer ju)
8 ounces Velveeta cheese (I like spicy)
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (you can add more if you want more tang)
3 tablespoons dark beer (if you don't want to use beer, you can use milk, but the beer to me just really adds a nice flavor)
1 teaspoon grated onion
2 tablespoons diced bacon, sauteed (optional as a garnish)

Steps:

  • Cheese sauce -- Add the beer (or milk), cheese, mustard, and onion to a small sauce pan and heat up. Garnish with the sauteed bacon.
  • Bread -- Separate the 12 bread sticks and then cut each lengthwise in half to make 24 bread sticks. Now roll each one to make a small rope. Now make a knot. I don't care how you make the knot, use any design you want. I like to make a '"O" the cross the bottom and twist and then flip the cross piece back over the "O", but again, just make a knot, it isn't important that they look perfect.
  • Brush the breadstick with egg and then add the salt. Bake 375 for about 15 minutes until golden brown.
  • Serve with the cheese sauce. The perfect quick appetizer.

These pretzels are delicious, with a light crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. Topped with cheesy goodness!

Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 tsp active dry yeast
1 1/2 c water, warm
1 Tbsp sugar
2 tsp salt
4 1/2 c flour
4 Tbsp butter, melted
TOPPINGS
1 1/2 c cheese, shredded
1 egg - beaten
1 tsp water

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven 450*. In a measuring cup stir yeast, warm water, sugar and salt together let proof for 5-10 minutes till bubbly.
  • 2. In a mixing bowl, add flour, melted butter add yeast mixture. mix with wooden spoon (I use my clean hands) to form a ball.
  • 3. Flour a work surface, knead dough 5 minutes or until smooth. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover and set aside for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  • 4. Knead dough on floured surface for 5 minutes. Divide into 8-10 balls, roll out dough into a 12 inch length. Twist into pretzel shape.
  • 5. Meanwhile, bring 10 Cups of water to a boil, add 2/3 cups baking soda to the water. After pretzels are formed, drop into boiling soda water for 30 seconds. Remove and place on parchment lined baking sheet.
  • 6. Brush pretzels with egg wash (egg & water mixed) and sprinkle with shredded cheese of your choice. Place into oven to bake for 12-15 min... check them for brown color.

Tips:

  • Use active dry yeast. If you're using instant yeast, reduce the amount by half and dissolve it in warm water before adding it to the dough.
  • Proof the yeast before using it. This will ensure that it's active and will help the dough rise properly.
  • Knead the dough until it's smooth and elastic. This will help develop the gluten in the flour, which will give the pretzels their chewy texture.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place until it's doubled in size. This will take about 1-2 hours.
  • Shape the dough into pretzels. You can use a variety of methods, but the most common is to roll out the dough into a long rope, then twist it into a pretzel shape.
  • Boil the pretzels in a baking soda solution before baking them. This will give them their characteristic chewy crust.
  • Bake the pretzels in a hot oven until they're golden brown. This will take about 15-20 minutes.
  • Serve the pretzels warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Conclusion:

Cheesy soft pretzels are a delicious and easy-to-make snack or appetizer. They're perfect for parties, potlucks, or just a casual get-together. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can make these delicious pretzels at home. So next time you're looking for a tasty treat, give this recipe a try.
