1 cup sugar
1 Granny Smith or Ida Red apple, peel on
1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Steps:

  • When sugar has completely dissolved, place 5 or 6 slices of apple into the sugar syrup and simmer for 20 seconds. Using a slotted spoon, transfer slices to a wire rack to drain. Repeat process with remaining apple slices.
  • Lightly brush 2 baking sheets with vegetable oil and arrange apple slices in a single layer. Bake until apples are crisp, 2 to 2 1/2 hours. The apple chips will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. These apples hold their shape better during baking and have a nice tart flavor that complements the sweetness of the cinnamon and sugar.
  • Slice the apples evenly: This will help them cook evenly. Use a sharp knife or a mandoline to slice the apples into thin, even slices.
  • Toss the apples with the seasonings: This will help the flavors to penetrate the apples. Use a combination of cinnamon, sugar, and nutmeg for a classic apple chip flavor. You can also add other spices like ginger, cardamom, or allspice.
  • Bake the apple chips at a low temperature: This will help them to dry out without burning. Bake the apple chips at 200°F for 1-2 hours, or until they are crispy.
  • Let the apple chips cool completely: This will help them to crisp up. Let the apple chips cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before storing them.

Conclusion:

Apple chips are a healthy and delicious snack that are easy to make at home. With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a batch of crispy, flavorful apple chips that are perfect for snacking, lunch boxes, or parties. So next time you're looking for a healthy snack, reach for a handful of apple chips instead of a bag of chips or cookies.
