Tips:

  • Choose the Right Sausage: Italian sausage comes in a variety of flavors and spice levels. For this recipe, a mild or sweet Italian sausage is a good choice.
  • Slice the Cabbage Thinly: This will help it cook evenly and quickly.
  • Don't Crowd the Pan: When browning the sausage, make sure to not overcrowd the pan. This will prevent the sausage from cooking evenly and will make it more likely to stick to the pan.
  • Season Generously: This dish benefits from generous seasoning. Be sure to add plenty of salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  • Use a Large Pot: You'll need a large pot to accommodate the cabbage and sausage. A Dutch oven or large stockpot is a good choice.
  • Simmer Until the Cabbage is Tender: The cabbage should be tender but still slightly crisp. This will take about 20-30 minutes.
  • Serve with Mashed Potatoes or Rice: This dish is traditionally served with mashed potatoes or rice. It can also be served with a side salad.
