Tips:

  • Use a variety of apples. This will give your crisp a more complex flavor and texture. Some good choices include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn apples.
  • Peel and slice the apples thinly. This will help them cook evenly.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan. If you do, the apples will steam instead of roast and your crisp will be soggy.
  • Use a combination of brown sugar and granulated sugar. This will give your crisp a rich, caramelized flavor.
  • Add some spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger are all good choices.
  • Top your crisp with a streusel topping. This will give it a crunchy, golden crust.
  • Bake your crisp until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown. This usually takes about 45 minutes.
  • Serve your crisp warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
