How to Make the Best Sugar Cookies Recipe by Tasty image

Here's what you need: unsalted butter, granulated sugar, cream cheese, large egg, large egg yolks, McCormick® vanilla extract, McCormick® almond extract, kosher salt, all purpose flour, baking powder, cream of tartar, powdered sugar, kosher salt, vanilla extract, gel food coloring, water, pasteurized egg white

Provided by Scott Loitsch

Categories     Desserts

Yield 12 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 17

24 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 ½ cups granulated sugar
3 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
1 large egg
2 large egg yolks
1 teaspoon McCormick® vanilla extract
½ teaspoon McCormick® almond extract
1 teaspoon kosher salt
3 ½ cups all purpose flour, plus more for dusting
½ teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
4 cups powdered sugar
½ teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
gel food coloring, of your choice
water, as needed
¼ cup pasteurized egg white

Steps:

  • Make the cookie dough: In a large bowl, cream together the butter, sugar, and cream cheese with an electric hand mixer on high speed for about 5 minutes, until fluffy and the sugar is mostly dissolved. Scrape down the bowl as needed to evenly beat the mixture.
  • Add the egg, egg yolks, vanilla, and almond extract and mix well, scraping down the sides of the bowl.
  • Add the salt, then sift the flour, baking powder, and cream of tartar into the bowl and fold to incorporate some of the flour. Then beat on low speed, just until incorporated and the dough comes together.
  • Shape the dough into a flat disc and wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or up to 3-4 days.
  • When ready to bake the cookies, preheat the oven to 350˚F (180˚C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Remove the dough from the fridge and let sit at room temperature for a few minutes to soften slightly.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the cookie dough with a rolling pin to ¼-inch (6mm) thick.
  • Dip cookie cutters of your choice in some extra flour and cut out shapes from the dough. Gather any excess dough into a ball and chill in the fridge to firm, then re-roll and cut out more cookies. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet and chill for at least 20 minutes to ensure they hold their shapes.
  • Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges just barely start to turn golden brown. Cool completely on a wire rack before decorating with royal icing or frosting.
  • To make the royal icing, sift the powdered sugar into a large bowl and add the salt. On one side of the bowl, add the vanilla and egg whites.
  • Where you added the liquids, begin whisking the powdered sugar into the liquids, gathering a bit more as you whisk to prevent lumps from forming, until all of the powdered sugar is incorporated. Add food coloring, if desired, and whisk to incorporate. You can divide the icing into smaller bowls to make more than one color. At this point, the icing should be a good consistency for piping borders. If you'd like the frosting to be looser to flood or dip your cookies, add a few tablespoons of water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Decorate the cookies as desired.
  • Enjoy!

THE BEST SOFT AND CHEWY SUGAR COOKIES YOU WILL EVER MAKE!!

The Best Soft and Chewy Sugar Cookies You Will Ever Make!! image

I make this sugar cookie recipe every Christmas with my family. My mom is a teacher, and she had a baker's daughter many years ago. The baker made these for a class party, and my mom loved them so much that she shared her recipe. The trick is not to overcook them. I always use almond extract because I think it gives a better flavor. I have also made them with royal icing, and they tasted equally delicious. It is all your personal preference. This recipe does make a lot of cookies, depending on how big you cut them, but they always go really fast. This recipe makes a soft, tender dough. The dough initially is sticky, so add flour as you roll them out- but remember, the more flour you add and the more you mix them, the tougher the dough. Enjoy them!

Time 4h8m

Yield 4-5 dozen

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
1 cup sour cream
3 eggs
1/2 teaspoon almond extract or 1 teaspoon vanilla
5 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Cream sugar and shortning. Add sour cream, eggs, and almond/vanilla. Mix well.
  • In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add to creamed mixture until well blended. Remember, the more you mix, the tougher your dough will be.
  • Chill for a few hours (at least 3-4). The dough will be soft and slightly sticky.
  • Roll out (I use a floured pastry cloth), and cut with a cookie cutter. Flour cutter between each cookie to prevent sticking.

SOFTEST SUGAR COOKIES EVER!!

Softest Sugar Cookies Ever!! image

Every time I make these, hubby takes a taste of the dough and declares "OMG that is SOOOO good!!" So I guess as far as tasty cookie dough goes, this recipe is also a winner. Although that's to be expected of America's Test Kitchen recipes. After all, they do spend a lot of time researching and testing recipe to find the perfect combination of flavor and balance.

Time 10m

Yield 24 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
7/8 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
2 large eggs, room temp
1/2 cup granulated sugar, mixed with some turbinado sugar for rolling

Steps:

  • Preheat to 350°F Mixed 1/2 cup of the sugar with some turbinado sugar in a small bowl for coating. Set aside. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt together. Set aside. Beat butter and rest of the sugar (1 1/2 cups) together in a large bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Beat in the vanilla, then the eggs one at a time, until combined, only about 30 seconds. Reduce the speed to low and mix in the flour mixture until just combined. Chill the dough for about 30 minutes. Line cookie sheets with parchment. Using wet hands, roll 2 Tablespoons of dough into balls, then roll in sugar to coat. Place balls on sheets, spaced about 2 inches apart. Very slightly flatten cookies with a flat surface (the bottom of a glass, measuring cup, spatula, etc).
  • Bake cookies until edges are set and just barely beginning to brown but the centers are still soft and puffy, about 10-12 minutes. To keep these soft, you DON'T want to overbake them! Leave cookies on baking sheet after removing from oven for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely.

Tips:

  • Use softened butter: Softened butter is easier to cream with sugar and results in a smoother, more tender cookie.
  • Chill the dough: Chilling the dough before baking helps the cookies hold their shape and prevents them from spreading too much.
  • Don't overmix the dough: Overmixing the dough can make the cookies tough. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Use a cookie scoop: A cookie scoop helps ensure that all of the cookies are the same size and shape.
  • Bake the cookies at the right temperature: The cookies should be baked at a moderate temperature (350°F) so that they have time to cook through without burning.
  • Let the cookies cool completely: Let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack before storing them. This will help them keep their shape and prevent them from becoming too soft.

Conclusion:

These soft sugar cookies are the perfect treat for any occasion. They're easy to make, delicious, and sure to be a hit with everyone who tries them. So next time you're looking for a sweet and satisfying snack, give these soft sugar cookies a try. You won't be disappointed!
