CAMPFIRE BANANA SPLITS

Campfire Banana Splits image

This was a recipe from my old Girl Scouting days. A very easy recipe for all ages that needs little adult supervision. Great for sleep-overs and backyard camping trips.

Provided by Toni Boncella Blyth

Categories     Desserts     Fruit Dessert Recipes     Banana Dessert Recipes

Time 18m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 3

6 large bananas, unpeeled, stems removed
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1 (10.5 ounce) package miniature marshmallows

Steps:

  • Preheat the grill for high heat.
  • Spray 4 sheets of aluminum foil, large enough to wrap bananas, with cooking spray.
  • Slice the peel of the banana from stem to bottom, while slicing the banana inside lengthwise. The bananas can be cut into slices instead if you like, (while still in the peel) for easier handling later.
  • Carefully open the banana just wide enough to place the chocolate chips and marshmallows inside the peel with the banana. Stuff with as much of the chocolate chips and marshmallows as desired.
  • Wrap the bananas with the aluminum foil and place on the grill or directly in the coals of a fire. Leave in long enough to melt the chips and the marshmallows, about 5 minutes. Unwrap bananas, open the peels wide, and eat with a spoon.

TRADITIONAL BANANA SPLIT

Traditional Banana Split image

There is some debate in our ice cream parlor what the "traditional" split consists of. I did some research before we opened and it seems that this is the most consistently "traditional" split served, even though some have marshmallow, peanuts, crushed cherries and more. I prefer hot fudge over the chocolate syrup, personally :P

Time 5m

Number Of Ingredients 10

TROPICAL FRUIT SPLITS WITH RUM SAUCE AND CHILE-MACADAMIA BRITTLE

Tropical Fruit Splits with Rum Sauce and Chile-Macadamia Brittle image

Categories     Rum     Fruit     Dessert     Picnic     Macadamia Nut     Summer     Grill/Barbecue     Gourmet     Vegetarian     Pescatarian     Wheat/Gluten-Free     Peanut Free     Soy Free     Kosher

Yield Makes 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 15

For sauce
1/2 cup dark rum
1/4 cup boiling-hot water
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
For grilled fruit
1 firm-ripe mango, peeled
1 papaya, peeled, halved, and seeded
1/2 fresh pineapple, peeled and cored
12 small ripe finger bananas or 6 small regular bananas
1 tablespoon chili powder
Chile-macadamia brittle
3 pints premium vanilla ice cream
Garnish: toasted fresh coconut shavings or toasted sweetened flaked coconut

Steps:

  • Make sauce:
  • Stir together rum, boiling-hot water, and vanilla. Cook sugar in a 3-quart heavy saucepan over moderately low heat, stirring slowly with a fork, until melted and pale golden. Cook caramel without stirring, swirling pan, until deep golden. Remove pan from heat and carefully stir in rum mixture (caramel will harden and steam vigorously). (Pan is removed from the flame to prevent alcohol from igniting. If it does ignite, simply allow flames to burn out on their own.) Simmer sauce until smooth. Remove pan from heat and when bubbling subsides stir in butter. Cool sauce to room temperature.
  • Grill fruit:
  • Prepare grill for cooking. Standing mango upright, cut 1 lengthwise slice from each broad side of mango (be careful because peeled mango is slippery) and discard pit.
  • Cut each papaya half lengthwise into thirds.
  • Standing pineapple upright, cut lengthwise into 1/2-inch-thick slices.
  • Halve bananas lengthwise. Sprinkle all fruit lightly on 1 side with chili powder.
  • Grill fruit on a well-oiled rack set 5 to 6 inches over glowing coals until grill marks form, about 1 minute. Turn fruit over and grill 1 minute more. Transfer to a cutting board and slice into decorative pieces.
  • Coarsely chop three fourths of brittle, reserving remainder for garnish.
  • Put 3 scoops ice cream into each of 8 dishes and top with grilled fruit and sauce. Sprinkle splits with chopped brittle and garnish with larger pieces of brittle and coconut.

Tips:

  • Choose ripe bananas. The riper the bananas, the sweeter and more flavorful they will be. If the bananas are too green, they will be tart and not as enjoyable.
  • Use high-quality ice cream. The ice cream is the star of the show, so make sure to use a good quality brand that you enjoy. You can use one flavor or a variety of flavors.
  • Don't skimp on the toppings. The toppings are what make the banana split special. Be generous with your toppings and use a variety of colors and textures. Some popular toppings include whipped cream, chocolate syrup, caramel sauce, nuts, sprinkles, and fruit.
  • Make it a party! Banana splits are a great dessert to share with friends and family. Make a big batch and let everyone customize their own banana split.

Conclusion:

Banana splits are a classic dessert that is always a hit. They are easy to make and can be customized to everyone's liking. With a few simple tips, you can make the perfect banana split that will be enjoyed by all. So next time you are looking for a delicious and easy dessert, give the banana split a try. You won't be disappointed!
