When I was 18 and newly married, experimenting with all kinds of cook books, to feed the new husband, I ran across this yummy treat he just adored.

Number Of Ingredients 12

HOT CHEESE PUPS
1 pkg active dry yeast
1/4 c warm water
1 c milk, scalded
1/4 c butter
2 Tbsp sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 egg
3 1/2 - 4 c all purpose flour
1 lb cheddar cheese or american
onion powder or finely chopped onion
butter

Steps:

  • 1. Skillet 325 degrees
  • 2. Soften yeast in warm water. Combine milk, butter, sugar, salt, and egg in mixing bowl. Cool to lukewarm. Add 1 cup flour; beat well. Stir in yeast. Add remainder of flour, stirring to form a stiff dough. Cover; let rise in warm place until light and doubled, about an hour. Roll out dough, half at a time, on floured surface to a 14x8 inch rectangle. Cut into 8 7x2 inch pieces. Cut your cheese into sticks about 6 inches long and 1/2 inch thick. Place one in center of each piece of dough. Sprinkle each with onion powder or 1/2 teaspoon finely chopped onion. Bring edges to center; pinch to seal. Seal ends. Place seam-side down on tray. Cover; let rise in warm place, about 30 minutes. Fry in heavily buttered skillet on medium heat (325-350) about 2 minutes on each side. Turn carefully to brown all sides. Add more butter as necessary. Serve hot.
  • 3. Tips: For variety, add crumpled crisp bacon with cheese. Or, fill with frankfurters instead or with the cheese. To reheat, place on ungreased cookie sheet. Place uncovered in 350 oven for 15 minutes. *If using self rising flour omit the salt.

I'm not a big fan of cheese pups, but these were actually really good. The cheese was gooey and melted, and the breading was crispy.

These were delicious! I used a different type of breading and they still turned out great.

These were okay. I thought the breading was a bit bland, and the cheese wasn't as gooey as I expected.

I was a bit skeptical about these at first, but I'm so glad I tried them! They were so easy to make and they turned out so good. The cheese was perfectly melted and the hot dogs were cooked to perfection.

These were delicious! I used a blend of mozzarella and cheddar cheese, and they were so gooey and flavorful. I will definitely be making these again.
