1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 (12 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips (2 cups)
Powdered sugar (optional)

Steps:

  • HEAT oven to 350°F. Coat baking sheets with no-stick cooking spray.
  • BEAT brown sugar, shortening, water and vanilla with electric mixer at medium speed until well blended. Beat in eggs. Combine flour, cocoa, salt and baking soda. Mix into shortening mixture at low speed just until blended. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop by rounded measuring tablespoonsful 2 inches apart onto prepared baking sheets.
  • BAKE 8 to 10 minutes, or until cookies are set. Cool 2 minutes on baking sheet. Place on cooling rack to cool completely. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality chocolate: The type of chocolate you use will greatly impact the flavor of your cookies. Look for a chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 60% for a rich, decadent flavor.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing the batter will result in tough, dry cookies. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Chill the dough before baking: Chilling the dough for at least 30 minutes will help the cookies hold their shape and prevent them from spreading too much.
  • Bake the cookies at the right temperature: The ideal temperature for baking brownie cookies is 350°F. If you bake them at a higher temperature, they will be more likely to burn.
  • Don't overbake the cookies: Overbaked cookies will be dry and crumbly. Bake them just until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached.
