CREAM CHEESE WONTONS

Cream Cheese Wontons image

Provided by Ree Drummond : Food Network

Categories     appetizer

Time 40m

Yield 24 wontons

Number Of Ingredients 11

3 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
1 tablespoon Sriracha or other hot sauce
1 teaspoon vinegar or rice wine vinegar
1/4 teaspoon sesame oil
8 ounces cream cheese
1 tablespoon Sriracha or other hot sauce (more to taste)
2 green onions, light green and dark green parts, chopped
1 egg
24 wonton wrappers
Vegetable oil, for frying

Steps:

  • For the dipping sauce: Mix together the honey, soy sauce, Sriracha, vinegar and sesame oil in a small bowl and set aside.
  • For the wontons: In the bowl of a mixer (or you can do it by hand), mix together the cream cheese, Sriracha and green onions until totally combined (scrape the mixer bowl if necessary). In a separate bowl, mix together the egg and 1/2 cup water.
  • One at a time, assemble the wontons: Place approximately 1/2 teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture on one corner of a wonton wrapper. Use your finger to "paint" the egg wash all around the edges of the wrapper. Roll the wrapper on a diagonal, starting with the cream cheese corner and stopping when half the wrapper is rolled and the cream cheese mixture is inside. Bring up the 2 ends and use the egg wash to stick them together. Allow the remaining pointed end to naturally tuck backward. (The wontons should resemble tortellini.) As you work, place the assembled wontons under plastic wrap or a light towel to keep them from drying out.
  • Heat 2 to 3 inches of vegetable oil in a large saucepan or medium skillet until a deep-fry thermometer inserted in the oil registers just under 350 degrees F. (You don't want the oil too hot or it will burn the wontons! Experiment with a spare sheet of wonton wrappers to check.)
  • In batches of 4 or 5 at a time, fry the wontons for 45 seconds to 1 minute, flipping carefully midway through to make sure they brown evenly. Remove them when you think they still could stand to slightly brown a teeny bit more (because they will slightly brown in the seconds after you remove them from the pan!). Drain the wontons on a paper towel. Repeat with the remaining batches.
  • It's best to wait 5 to 10 minutes before serving the wontons, as the cream cheese filling can be quite hot. Serve with the dipping sauce.

BAKED CREAM CHEESE WONTONS

A Midwestern favorite: cream cheese in wonton wrappers. The recipe dimensions are simple (1 wonton wrapper plus 1 teaspoon cream cheese) and can be easily altered. You can add chives, crab, and other kinds of cheese, just decrease the amount of cream cheese accordingly.

Wonton wrappers are filled with cream cheese, crab meat (I use imitation, but you can use either), garlic, and onions. You just have to heat them so the cheese is melted hot. Don't overcook. Serve with rice and sweet and sour sauce. Good as an appetizer, or meal.

CRAB AND CREAM CHEESE WONTONS (SWEET!)

Crab and Cream Cheese Wontons (Sweet!) image

I've searched the web for crab won tons that tasted like the ones at my local Chinese restaurant. After no luck and recipes gone horribly wrong, I asked the owner of the restaurant. Apparently they get them shipped from China, pre-made. So she had no idea. So I went home and decided to try it myself - WITHOUT help from anyone else. The result - AWESOME! I've managed to get the taste of the ones from the restaurant. And they're SWEET too.

Time 31m

Yield 20 Depends on size

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 (8 ounce) box cream cheese (room temperature)
3 tablespoons sugar
1 stick imitation crabmeat (or real crab made into a stick)
1 green onion
wonton wrapper, Gyoza Wrappers, egg roll wrappers (cut into 4 squares)

Steps:

  • Chop the crab and the onion into tiny pieces.
  • Soak the onion in cold water. (The onion adds the tangy flavor. I only used the green and soaked it for a long time. If you like more onion, use the white and soak for less time).
  • (Food processor may be used for next steps.)
  • Add sugar to cream cheese and mix well.
  • Add crab, mix well.
  • Add onion, mix well.
  • Using a butter knife, take some of the mixture and put into the middle of each wrapper. Bring sites together so it looks like a X from above. (the mixture holds it shut. It's important that you DO NOT seal the wrappers. The oil getting inside is what gives it it's texture.).
  • Deep-Fry on 375ºF for 1-2 minutes - depending on how dark you want them. Even if they look soft when you take them out, they continue to cook after removed. Overcooking will burn the wrappers.
  • (If cheese escapes a little - this is normal. If it happens every time and becomes bothersome, then just close the corners together more so it's self-sealed better. The X shape is basic, but you can squish them together more if needed).
  • Place on paper towels to drain oil.
  • Serving depends on how much you use in each wrapper. Time depends on how quick you are.

LOBSTER AND CREAM CHEESE WONTONS

Lobster and Cream Cheese Wontons image

A cross between a rangoon and a potsticker. The bonus is that they're not deep fried, but pan sautéed in non-stick spray. From: http://www.budgetbytes.com/2010/06/lobster-cream-cheese-wontons/

Provided by gailanng

Categories     Lobster

Time 1h

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

8 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
8 ounces imitation lobsters or 8 ounces crab, finely chopped
1 dash garlic powder (optional)
1 large egg
1/2 bunch green onion
1 (14 ounce) package wonton wrappers (about a 42 count package)
1/2 teaspoon sriracha garlic sauce
nonstick cooking spray

Steps:

  • In a bowl, combine the cream cheese, green onion, garlic powder, egg and Sriracha until well combined. Add the lobster.
  • Ready a small bowl of water. This is to help seal the edges of the wonton wrappers. Working in groups of about 6 wontons at a time, place about one teaspoon of the cheese filling in the center of each wonton square. Using your fingers, wet the wrapper all along the four sides. Fold them diagonally corner to corner and pinch the wrapper together to seal. Try to squeeze the air out as you make the first fold. Bring the two opposite points of the triangle together around front and squeeze together to seal.
  • Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Working in groups of about 8-10 wontons, drop them into the boiling water and remove them once they begin to float (about 3 minutes). Place the boiled wontons on a cooling rack placed over a baking sheet so the excess water can drain off. The wontons skins should now look transparent.
  • Once all of the wontons have been boiled, heat a large non-stick skillet coated with non-stick spray oil over medium-high heat. When it is very hot, place about 8 wontons in at a time. "Fry or saute" the wontons on each side until they are golden brown, blistered and crispy in some spots. Add additional non-stick spray as you go, it will help crisp up the wontons.

CREAM CHEESE WONTONS

Cream Cheese Wontons image

These Cream Cheese Wontons are filled with cream cheese, chicken, Pepper Jack and a perfect blend of spices. These bite size crispy treats are a little more economical than crab rangoon and a cinch to make. Are you planning a party?

Provided by Beth Pierce

Categories     Cheese Appetizers

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 12

8 oz cream cheese (1 box)
1 1/2 c pepper jack cheese grated
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
4 green onions sliced
1 c finely diced cooked chicken
1 package wonton wrappers (12 ounce)
vegetable oil
3 Tbsp low sodium soy sauce
1 Tbsp cool water
2 Tbsp mirin
1/8 tsp sesame oil

Steps:

  • 1. In large food processor add cream cheese, Pepper Jack, garlic powder, onion powder, green onions and cooked chicken. Pulse just a few times; just enough to combine.
  • 2. Place heaping teaspoon in the center of each wonton and pull up sides and pinch. Lightly moisten fingers with cold water and pinch again. Press down gently on plate to get their bottoms flat (so they will stand up). Keep extra wontons skins covered with lightly moistened paper towel while you work. Repeat until all wontons are full. Cover filled wontons with lightly moistened paper towel while you are working and heating the oil.
  • 3. Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil to 350 - 375 degrees in a heavy skillet. Working in small batches fry until golden brown; less than 1 minute. Use tongs to brown on both sides if they fall over. Drain on paper towels.
  • 4. In small bowl mix soy sauce, water, mirin and sesame oil. Serve warm wontons with sauce.

Tips:

  • For a crispier wonton, fry them in hot oil (375°F) until golden brown.
  • To make the wontons ahead of time, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and store them in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Fry them just before serving.
  • If you don't have wonton wrappers, you can use egg roll wrappers instead. Just cut them into smaller squares.
  • For a vegetarian version of these wontons, omit the shrimp and add more vegetables, such as chopped carrots, celery, or water chestnuts.
  • Serve the wontons with your favorite dipping sauce, such as soy sauce, sweet and sour sauce, or chili sauce.

Conclusion:

Cream cheese wontons are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer that is perfect for any party or gathering. They are also a great way to use up leftover cream cheese. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a delicious and impressive snack that everyone will love.
