MASALA POPCORN

This popcorn is a take on the Indian snack chiwda, a sweet and savory mix often made with puffed rice, dried fruit, nuts, spices, and herbs. It's a mainstay during Diwali, much like you'd have Chex Mix during the American holiday season.

Time 10m

Yield 1 cup, 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1/2 teaspoon curry powder
1/2 teaspoon garam masala
1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
12 cups popped popcorn
nonstick cooking spray

Steps:

  • In a small bowl stir together the curry, garam masala, tumeric and black pepper.
  • Spread popcorn in an even layer in a large shallow baking pan. Lightly coat popcorn with cooking spray. Sprinkle the curry mixture evenly over popcorn; toss to coat.

Tips:

  • Choose the right popcorn kernels: For the best results, use non-GMO popcorn kernels. These kernels are less likely to contain hulls, which can get stuck in your teeth.
  • Use a large pot: A large pot will help to distribute the heat evenly and prevent the popcorn from burning.
  • Add oil and spices to the pot: Before adding the popcorn kernels, add a tablespoon of oil and your desired spices to the pot. This will help to flavor the popcorn and prevent it from sticking to the pot.
  • Cover the pot: Once you've added the popcorn kernels, cover the pot with a lid. This will help to trap the steam and create a more even cooking environment.
  • Shake the pot: Every few minutes, shake the pot to distribute the popcorn kernels and prevent them from burning.
  • Listen for the popping to slow down: Once the popping slows down to a few seconds between pops, remove the pot from the heat.
  • Pour the popcorn into a bowl: Pour the popcorn into a large bowl and let it cool slightly before serving.

Conclusion:

Indian spiced popcorn is a delicious and healthy snack that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a good source of fiber, antioxidants, and other nutrients. The spices used in this recipe give the popcorn a unique and flavorful taste that is sure to please everyone.
