WWII Oatmeal Molasses Cookies image

This was my Grandmother's recipe from the 1940's. These cookies use molasses in place of brown sugar, which was one of the items rationed during the war (and harder to get than white sugar, they tell me). To me they're better than regular oatmeal cookies!

SORGHUM MOLASSES OATMEAL COOKIES

Sorghum Molasses Oatmeal Cookies image

These cookies are very flavorful, not at all like the typical oatmeal cookie. If Sorghum isn't available in your neck of the woods, you can certainly substitute Molasses. For those that like raisins or chocolate chips, add as necessary. Some of our family doesn't appreciate the taste of chips or raisins, so I make some plain, and some with.

Categories     Cookies     Dessert     Bake

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/2 c. shortening
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. sugar
1 egg
1/4 c. milk
1/2 c. molasses
1 1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 c. old fashioned oatmeal
1 tsp. soda
1/2 c. nuts (opt.)
1/2 c. raisins (opt.)

Steps:

  • Cream together the shortening, sugar and cinnamon. Beat in molasses and egg. Beat in flour and baking soda alternately with milk. Stir in oatmeal and mix thoroughly. Add raisins and or nuts if using. Drop by teaspoonful on greased baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.

Tips:

  • Use fresh oatmeal. Fresh oatmeal will have a better flavor and texture than old oatmeal.
  • Grind the oatmeal into a fine powder. This will help the cookies to have a smooth texture.
  • Use dark molasses. Dark molasses has a richer flavor than light molasses.
  • Chill the dough before baking. Chilling the dough will help the cookies to hold their shape and prevent them from spreading too much.
  • Bake the cookies until they are just set. The cookies should be slightly soft in the center when you take them out of the oven. They will continue to firm up as they cool.

Conclusion:

Oatmeal molasses cookies are a delicious and easy-to-make treat. They are perfect for a quick snack or dessert. With just a few simple ingredients, you can make a batch of these cookies that will be enjoyed by everyone. So next time you are looking for a sweet treat, give oatmeal molasses cookies a try!
