REFRIED BEANS WITHOUT THE REFRY

Refried Beans Without the Refry image

Refried beans made simple in a crock pot...a great and low fat alternative to canned beans. If you like variety, black beans can be substituted for part of the pinto beans. Note: Since reviewers commented on the salt, I've reduced the amount. If you think this may still be too much salt for you, add it at the end and to your personal taste. Enjoy!

Tips for Making Refried Beans Without the Refry:

  • Use dried beans: For the best flavor and texture, use dried beans instead of canned beans. Dried beans are more nutritious and have a better flavor.
  • Soak the beans overnight: Soaking the beans overnight helps to soften them and reduce the cooking time.
  • Use a pressure cooker: A pressure cooker is the fastest way to cook beans. If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can also cook the beans in a slow cooker or on the stovetop.
  • Add flavorings: Add flavorings such as garlic, onion, cumin, and chili powder to the beans while they are cooking. You can also add fresh herbs, such as cilantro or oregano.
  • Mash the beans: Once the beans are cooked, mash them with a potato masher or a food processor. You can also use a blender to puree the beans, if desired.
  • Serve immediately or store for later: Refried beans can be served immediately or stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can also freeze refried beans for up to 3 months.
